Youth Activities:  Spring and Summer, 2012

Yelm Community Services is providing the following youth programs during the spring and summer months.  All youth programs offered by Yelm Community Services are available to all youth in the Yelm community and always have been.

After School Activities from 2:30 to 6 p.m., ages 5-18, Monday through Friday:
After the Yelm Middle School Boys’ Basketball season ends at the end of March, the youth center will continue to be open after school from 2:30 to six p.m. beginning Monday, April 2, 2012.  Organized activities and snacks will be available for youth ages 5-12.  The teen center will be open, too, for middle and high school youth.  Participants need to sign up by accessing forms available at Yelm Community Services.  The cost to use the agency’s facility is $25 per student per year.  Yelm Community Services’ staff provide paid staff support for all activities.  Students can participate in open gym, arts and crafts, leadership activities, play air hockey, foosball, ping pong ball, study in the study center,  play on the Wii, x-box and other activities.

Late Night Teen Dances, April and May, 2012:
Late night teen dances for Yelm and Ridge Line Middle School students will be held on Friday, April 20 and Friday, May 11, from 7-9 p.m.  Admittance is two dollars and students must present a student I.D. or other proof that they are a student at either Yelm Middle School or Ridge Line School.

Saturday Fun Events, May and June, 2012:
The Saturday Fun events are the following dates:  Saturday May 5, May 23, June 2, and June 16, and goes from 10 – 1 each day.  This is a free, open gym event for young people to come with their parents to learn about summer day camp.
Great Escapes Day Camp begins on Thursday, June 21, 2012.  It is for students entering 1st to 6th grade.  Day camp goes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday, Monday through Friday, except for July 4th.  Day Camp lasts through August 31. The cost for day camp per child is $112/week, with a $10/wk. discount for second or more children.  Yelm Community Services sells day camp shirts for $10, which are required to be worn for all field trip days. 

Yelm Community Services has sponsored Great Escapes Day Camp for youth in the greater Yelm Community since 1971.  Yelm Community Services provides many fun activities and allows youth to combine the fun and freedom of being in a natural setting while learning new skills and making new friends.  Each week offers adventures that teach campers to respect and enjoy nature while having fun – hiking, exploring, art and crafts, swimming, camp songs, and field trips.  Our day camp staff helps to build teamwork and to provide challenging, educational, and safe activities for kids.  We make day camp easier for families with convenient drop off and pick up times.

We go on two to three field trips per week.  Some of the trips we have planned are to the following destinations:  Tacoma Rainiers Baseball, NW Trek, Movie Theater, Long Lake, River Ridge, the Capitol Campus, roller skating, museums, Nisqually Nature Reach, bowling, Point Defiance, and much more.  Here is the full flyer for Great Escapes Day Camp:

Week One:  June 21-22:  Super Sports. You'll spend your time playing sports and games, both classic and crazy! Challenge yourself to compete in everything; from some good old-fashioned kickball, to a rousing game of water balloons, capture the flag, and everything in between.

Week Two:  June 25 – June 29:  Adventure Week.  Do you have what it takes? Every day is a different adventure during this week of non-stop excitement. But tread carefully because you may just find yourself in the middle of an all out, fun-filled pirate’s battle!

Week Three:  July 2-6: Party in the USA.  Get warmed up for the 4th of July with watermelon-eating contests, potato sack races, and all sorts of classic patriotic-picnic holiday activities. Take a ride on the slip and slide and enjoy a week of fun in the sun! (no camp on July 4th).

Week Four:  July 9-13: Water World. Welcome to Water World! Wear your swimsuits and be prepared to get soaked! Water bucket brigade, rubber duck races, slip and slide and.... water balloons galore are just a taste of what to expect in this wildly wet, water-filled week!

Week Five:  July 16-20: Where the World Things Are. Discover the power of nature in the wilderness! You'll learn to use the resources around you while exploring the many trails our campground has to offer. Get out of the house and spend some time in the Washington sunshine hiking through our creeks, playing games in the woods, and learning about the wilderness around you.

Week Six:  July 23-July 27: Eco-Challenge and Environmental Awareness Week. Discover outdoor survival skills, group challenges, respecting the environment, minimum impact, making a contribution, taking action, positive participation.

Week Seven:  July 30 – August 3: Road Trip. Pack your bags and get ready for an awesome trip across the USA and the World! During the week, you will learn about customs and traditions of the world as well as unique and interesting locations in the Americas. Get ready for a whirlwind of excitement on this journey.

Week Eight:  August 6 – August 10: Ooey, Gooey, and Slimy, Too. Get ready for a wacky week of icky, sticky, silly stuff that you create and take home. This isn't for the light-hearted; it goes way past your school science project! Come dressed to get dirty.

Week Nine:  August 13- August 17: Gamesapalooza. A week full of games and activities that focus on having fun, developing sportsmanship, and learning to be a team player. You’ll enjoy new games ranging from tag to Ultimate Frisbee.

Week Ten:  August 20 – August 24: Camp Spirit and Community Week.  We'll be looking at activities around team building, communications, making friendship ties and keeping them, and getting ready for the final week of summer day camp.

Week Eleven:  August 27 – August 31: Greatest Hits-Rewind.  We'll encompass all of your favorite games, songs, hikes, activities, and adventures from this summer as well as summers past in this "anything goes" week packed with only the best of the best!
